The reported active layer depths are in relation to the ground surface, the position of which changes over the season due to swelling and drying of the peat. Active layer is measured to the top of a metal rod that has been fixed in the permafrost. After the season the active layer in relation to the ground surface is computed based on relative levels between fix metal rods and the ground surface. Measurements were initiated in 2006. From 2006 - 2010 the active layer was only measured between chamber 1 and 2. In 2011 the active layer was also measured between chamber 5 and 6. From 2012 and onwards measurements have been conducted in the vicinity of each chamber at the site. No active layer measurements are published for 2014, due to poor data quality. Soil properties:Soil properties GeoBasis Zackenberg:The GeoBasis monitoring programme focuses on selected abiotic characteristics in order to describe the state of Greenlandic terrestrial environments and their potential feedback effects in a changing climate. Monitored plot data is up-scaled to a landscape level and is used to improve ecosystem models to be able to quantify these feedback mechanisms. The GeoBasis programme provides an active response to recommendations in international assessments such as ACIA and SWIPA; and is continuously being adapted based on AMAP and other international founded recommendations. Furthermore, the GeoBasis programme is directly involved in several international networks and research projects (e.g. the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring (CALM) programme, the Nordic Centre of Excellence DEFROST, the Danish Centre of Excellence CENPERM, the EU-projects PAGE21 and INTERACT, and the Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University).
